A TRIO of internationally renowned artists – two veteran painters and a ceramicist, all with connections to America but now living in England, have been brought together for the first time in a unique exhibition and retrospective called Expression.

Expression runs from July 30 until August 16 at The Town Mill’s Malthouse Gallery in Lyme Regis.

The paintings in the exhibition are colourful, landscape-based abstract works by Dorset-based John Hubbard and Devon-born Patrick Jones that evoke the essence of coastal waters.

The works are united by the painters’ shared experiences and cultural influences, especially their formative years spent in New York.

Hubbard’s paintings allude to natural forms, to the rhythms of growing things and recreate the experience of being in a particular place.

One work on show, Foaming, has never been seen outside his studio, so it’s a rare treat for Hubbard enthusiasts.

The collection of Jones’s paintings exhibited are his expression of being in the visible world, with subconscious images and experiences filtering through to the canvas.

Jones described his work as ‘improvised fun’.

Alongside and complementing these paintings are a number of delicate porcelain bowls by American Chris Prindl, who moved to Cornwall 20 years ago. Having been introduced to Japanese ceramic techniques, Prindl developed his own style in many directions, notably these porcelain bowls dressed in tantalising glazes.

Gary Willis, chair of the Town Mill trustees, said: “We are delighted to have these three acclaimed artists being exhibited at The Malthouse,

“This quality of exhibition raises the profile of and attracts wider audiences to our galleries, which are two of our long-term priorities.”

Expression has been devised for The Town Mill by Deborah Wood from The Art Room, an experienced arts professional who has been facilitating exhibitions in the South West for many years.

Town Mill Arts curator, Philip Clayton, has re-vamped The Malthouse for this exhibition.
