BOMB disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a West Dorset beach.
A cordon had been put in place around Church Cliff beach in Lyme Regis after a member of the public discovered a phosphorus flare.
Police and coastguards were called. They requested an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
PC Kirsti Ball, Lyme Regis Safer Neighbourhood Beat Officer, was at the scene with PCSO John Burton.
PC Ball filmed the controlled explosion, which can be seen below.
Cllr Daryl Turner, who represents the Lyme Regis ward at West Dorset District Council, said a local fossil hunter found the device.
Cllr Turner was walking his dog on the beach at the time.
He said: "I didn't see the item but the PCSO said it was about 18 inches long with what looked like a fuse head on it.
"The top was missing. There's usually a spring in there and that was on the rock.
"I spent 20 years in the army and that was good enough for me."
