IT was a glorious day for the Crewkerne Young Farmers Club annual ploughing match.

The early morning fog cleared to reveal the sight of 89 tractors and ploughmen competing for honours at the 52nd annual Crewkerne YFC ploughing match.

The spectators enjoyed the sunshine while the competitors revelled in the perfect ploughing conditions offered by the site.

The champion ploughman was Colin Heard of Pancrasweek near Holsworthy and the reversible ploughing championship was won by David Dosson, of Bridgwater.

The current YFC membership were well represented with five Crewkerne members and members from three other clubs competing.

Marcus Stephens of Ilchester, won the cup for a member of any Young Farmers Club, following his performance in his first entry in the 21-strong novice class, Daniel Hurley of Haselbury Plucknett near Crewkerne was the highest placed Crewkerne Young Farmer.

The eight ploughing judges, Raymond Bailey, John Kerslake, Mike Pugh, Roy Hill, Hugh Simmons, Roy Vickery, David Wareham and Malcolm White had the difficult task of choosing the prize winners, while David Hinkins undertook the judging of the six individual feed classes, with the overall fodder shield being awarded to Tommy Jeanes, along with the trophy for the best individual sample of forage.

The clubs thanks go to Lord Cameron of Dillington and to estate manager Chris Wilson, for providing a perfect site for the event.
