THE British Army will be attending this summer's Tankfest spectacular, as part of Armed Forces weekend.

Thousands of people are expected to pack out Bovington Tank Museum for the show - which this year also coincides with the centenary of the Bovington garrison and 100 years since the first tank was deployed in battle.

Soldiers from the Armoured Trials and Development Unit (ATDU) and the British Army's Centre of Excellence (ARMCEN) will be demonstrating 11 of the army's latest armoured fighting vehicles, including those which have seen action in recent conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bovington Armour Centre Commander Colonel Gordon Judd said: "The army’s involvement in Tankfest is an excellent opportunity for the public to see first-hand the types of equipment and training employed by the British Army today.

"It also offers people the chance to meet and talk to the soldiers themselves."

Vehicles being driven in the main arena will include the British Army's current main battle tank, Challenger 2, which will accompany Scimitars and Jackals.

All of the vehicles will then be on static display at the Tank Museum's Tank Park, where visitors will be able to take a closer look and talk to the soldiers who operate them.

Tankfest boasts the largest display of historic moving armour in the world.

Among the museum's collection include the world's first ever tank, Little Willie, through to the latest modern armoured fighting vehicles.

The museum also includes eight exhibitions, spanning the 100 year history of armoured warfare.

Tankfest, the museum's largest annual show, takes place over the June 25 & 26 weekend.
