A former Rotary Club president is still looking after the community after he passed away.

Money from the retiring collection at the late David Bettes’ funeral was given by the family to the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis to be spent as he wished.

David, a past President of the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis, had a great interest in the education of young people, so the club decided to split the monies between Lyme Regis Library and Charmouth Community Library for the benefit of young people.

Rotarian Jim Moseley was given the task of contacting the libraries to see if there was any way that this money could be used to further the library's contacts with young children. As it happened right at that time Charmouth Library was looking to replace its stock of Lego.

Jim said: "David was very keen when he was in the Rotary with helping the community and youth.

"It is the sort of thing the Rotary likes doing and we are proud to support our libraries and we know that David would be proud of how the money was used. He would be 100% behind it."

With input from the library staff, £150 of pre-owned Lego was purchased and handed over in time for the last week of the school holidays.

Jim and President Richard were given a tour of this community-run library and then treated to a cream tea kindly made and given by the staff.

Lyme Regis Library manager Joanne Hawkins came up with a list of goodies to appeal to their younger users.

Along with two wipe-down bean bags was a new notice board to display children’s artworks and an assortment of board games including three chess/draughts sets. In total £300 was donated.

The donations coincided with the government's promotion of chess for youngsters and the library has plans to start a chess club. The donations were all handed over by President Richard.

The club meets on Thursdays 5.45pm for 6.15pm at Hunters Lodge Inn, Charmouth Road, Raymonds Hill, EX13 5SZ.
