Veterans’ Section

MARTIN Oliver scored his first hole-in-one on the way to winning the veterans’ Gutty Trophy.

The competition, a bogey, one format not too popular with the majority of golfers, saw 44 of the 56 players end up with minus scores.

However, on this occasion there were some pleasant rewards, namely a beautiful June morning and two free drinks at the end of the round.

The first was on Keith Mundy who was celebrating his 80th birthday, the second came as a result of Oliver’s maiden ace on the tricky 14th.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Martin Oliver +4, 2 (acb) John Sansom + 2, 3 (acb) Richard Lomax +2, 4 (acb) Howard Bonfield +2

Division Two: 1 (acb) Ian Campbell +2, 2 Tony Williams +2, 3 Tony Burwood 0, 4 Tony Udall -2

Twenty-five women accompanied Liz Walker for her Lady Captain’s Away Day to Stover Golf Club on the hottest day of the year.

The competition was an individual Stableford with with the added intrigue of hidden partners.

The names of the partners and combined scores were then revealed.

The most successful pairing was Julie Woodruffe and Jean Stephens with 53 points, followed by Thompson and Di Neal, who had the best backnine, with 52.

Woodruffe and Stephens gave a vote of thanks to their captain for organising such a great day.
