WESTLAND SPORTS 6 BRIDPORT RESERVES 2

FUMING Bees’ boss Robin Townsend saw his side hit for six in controversial circumstances at Westland Sports, as they were handed their 11th defeat of the campaign.

Bridport went down to 10 men early on in Yeovil when Russell Legg was given his marching orders after an altercation with one of the hosts’ midfielders.

Commenting on the incident, manager Townsend said: “Russell and one of their midfielders have gone in for a standard challenge and there was nothing in it.

“They have both got up, said a few words to each other and, from where I was, it looked like Russell had put his head towards the other guy’s head. They didn’t touch heads.

“The referee had a word with both of them with a yellow card in his hand, but the linesman called him over.

“He has obviously seen a bit more than the rest of us and the referee went back and sent off Russell.

“Don’t get me wrong, it is probably a red card, I can’t moan at that.

“Russell is around 30, has a bit of a record for this kind of thing, and you would think by now he would know better. He doesn’t seem to be learning and will end up with another big ban.”

A man down for the rest of the contest, Bridport did manage to take the lead after Gary Bulman was brought down by the Sports’ keeper when clean through on goal.

Chris Herbst made no mistake from the penalty spot.

But Townsend believed that as well as awarding a penalty, the match official should have sent off the home side’s gloveman.

“I was fuming at that point,” he added. “In everybody’s opinion the goalie should have been sent off.

“It was a goalscoring chance which has been denied.

“If their keeper had been sent off it would have been a different game.”

Despite breaking the deadlock, the Bees went in 3-1 down at the break. Bulman then pulled one back to make it 3-2, in a spell of Bridport dominance early in the second period.

Ben Clarke spurned two golden chances to snatch an equaliser, before Townsend saw his side run out of steam and concede three more in the second half.

He added: “If we had got to 3-3 and maybe gone 4-3 up then it could have been a different game.

“I can’t blame the referee for the defeat overall, they were great going forward and we didn’t take the chances we had.”
