BRIDPORT skipper Ryan Hayter is keen to see some new faces join the club over the summer after a “disappointing” campaign at St Mary’s Field.

Hayter feels the Bees could benefit from a couple of additions to the squad in time for next season following a significant slump in form since the turn of the year.

With two games left, including Saturday’s trip to Shepton Mallet (3pm), Bridport cannot match the 53 points they totalled in the league last term.

That had been one of Hayter’s goals at the start of the campaign, and he reckons the loss of Ryan Dovell to injury from December onwards played a big part in his team’s poor run of results.

“This season has been disappointing,” he said. “It hasn’t gone the way we wanted it to.

“At the start of the season I would have been happy if we had matched last year and finished in mid-table.

“We haven’t done that and the season has petered out massively – it’s been a bit of an anti-climax really.

“One of the biggest reasons for that was losing Ryan Dovell as he scores a lot of our goals.

“When you look at how many goals we’ve scored this season compared to last season, it shows how we have struggled without him.”

He went on to add: “We need to regroup in the summer and we are in need of more players. I think we need to improve the squad and hopefully Ryan will be back.”

After only three league wins in 2015, Hayter admits that the confidence of the players has taken a knock in recent months. The spirit in the changing room hasn’t been what it normally is,” he said.

“We are a confidence team. When we go on a long unbeaten run it is really high, but when we go a while without winning it can suffer.

“The highlight of the season was probably our run in the FA Vase, but the league has petered out. We played really well at Street earlier this month and then let ourselves down against Gillingham.”

Bridport lost 4-0 at Willand Rovers last night and after Shepton Mallet this weekend go to Bradford Town next Saturday.
