IT WAS the July medal for Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club’s men on Sunday and 57 players entered.

Weather conditions were pretty good for golf but the lush rough and semi-rough is producing some strange results and it is not too difficult to pick out the few players that have managed to stay on the fairways.

Such a player was Julian Green who turned in the best score of the day to lead Division One by six shots with a fine nett score of 66 that included nine pars and two birdies.

The next best scores came from Division Three where Dave Boggis with a nett 68 beat runner-up Russell Weller by one stroke.

It was the middle handicap players who came off worse and the three best scores were all a nett 76 with Roger Galpin coming out on top of Division Two after countback.

RESULTS:

Division One: 1 Julian Green 77-11=66, 2 Gavin Gay 81-9=72, 3 Gary Edwardes 84-11=73

Division Two: 1 (acb) Roger Galpin 93-17=76, 2 (acb) Jon Legg-Bagg 89-13=76, 3 Richard Fox 94-18=76

Division Three: 1 Dave Boggis 89-21=68, 2 Russell Weller 93-24=69, 3 Tony Burwood 96-23=73

Weller had his handicap cut by three strokes, Green and Boggis by one.

Veterans’ Section

THE Thursday competition was the fifth. and penultimate round of the Holmes Cup, a medal off the white tees.

It was a mild morning with very little wind and receptive greens so one would have expected some good scores to be carded.

However, the mild wet weather of late has resulted in some very thick, lush rough and even the semi-rough is punishing.

Only 19 players out of the 46 that took part managed to card under 100 with their gross score and perhaps it was surprising that only five players failed to finish.

The best score of the day came from Division Two where the club captain’s father, Terry Kearley scored a nett 73.

Best score in Division One was Raymond Southcombe’s nett 74.

RESULTS:

Division One: 1 Raymond Southcombe 91-17=74, 2 Mike McGrady 91-16=75, 3 (acb) Keith Hicks 94-18=76

Division Two. 1 Terry Kearley 95-22=73, 2. Dave Boggis 96-21=75, 3 (acb) Martin Oliver 98-22=76

Kearley received a one-shot handicap cut.

TUESDAY saw a drawn Bowmaker playing a fundraising game for the essential defibrillator, which is going to be sited on the golf course, not physically on the course but near the pro’s shop, writes Di Neal.

A raffle was held afterwards and as a section the section raised approximately £100.

The winners were: 1 Carole Brown, Jan Clark and Joan Brake. 50 points, 2 Margaret Thompson & Liz Walker. 49 points on countback from
