IT WAS a very early start for Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club’s men on Sunday when the competition was a Dawn Patrol, three-man team Texas Scramble off a shotgun start.

Handicap was one sixth of combined and a minimum of four drives used from each player.

The start time was actually an hour after dawn but 6am was quite early enough for the 14 teams taking part.

Club captain Ian Kearley (14) and his team of Phil Winton (12) and Mike Vincent (12) emerged the winners with a score of 57.7.

Runners-up were Richard Parry (19), Barry Pitcher (21) and Barry O’Mahony (9) with 58.8.

In third place was the team of Robin Ormsby (18), Mark McMaster (22) and Mike Savage (9), scoring 59.8.

On Saturday it was the Juniors’ Open and it was the visiting players that took the prizes. Jacob Tidswell from Weymouth was the winner after countback with 79-9=70.

Second with the same handicap as well as the same score was Alex Dytham from Broadstone also scoring 79-9=70.

In third place after countback was Ed Fry from Westonbirt with 96-24=72. Mark Rankin (5) from Weymouth in fourth place carded the best gross score of 77.

The highest placed Bridport player was Mannie Wellman in sixth with 99-26=73.

Nineteen entrants turned out for the midweek Stableford.

Patrick Harper (9) lead the field scoring 36 points. In second place was junior Kieran Mulhall (7) with 34 points and in third was Dave Howat (16) with 33 points.

In the Hardy B League Bridport competed against Ferndown Forest at home and won 4-1.

Veterans’ Section

IT WAS Captains’ weekend at Bridport Golf Club and it started with the Golden Oldies Bowl where a group of Octogenarians – male and female – went out and played nine holes. The bowl was won by Alex Miller.

The Thursday competition was the sixth and final round of the Holmes Cup.

The winner of this round, Brian Fearon was a head and shoulders above the rest of the field with a nett score of 68.

This was largely due to some excellent putting with three or four 20 footers disappearing into the cup. Second man in Division One after countback was Colin Hore carding a nett 72. Seventy-six was the best score in Division Two produced by Tony Burwood and Brian Osborne with the former winning on countback.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Brian Fearon (81-13=68), 2 Colin Hore (acb) (88-16=72), 3 Roger Pollock (92-20=72), 4 Keith Hicks (92-18=74).

Division Two: 1 (acb) Tony Burwood (99-23=76), 2 Brian Osborne (99- 23=76), 3 (acb) Dave Smith (100-22=78), 4 (acb) Mick Kelson (102-24=78).

Fearon and Hore both received a one-shot handicap cut.

n The overall winner of the Holmes Cup – best three scores from the six rounds was Peter Marshall with a nett total of 211. Second was John Pitchford with a nett total of 213.

The eclectic winner was Peter Marshall scoring 67.18. Second was Vince Adams 69.29.

Ladies’ Section

SATURDAY saw members compete in the Captains Weekend Stableford, the winner was Judy Walters with 32 points, writes Di Neal.

Runner-up was Julie Oliver (31) with both received a prize from the Ian Kearley the club captain.

Tuesday saw ladies playing the Sylvia Frampton Medford competition, nine holes of medal and nine holes of Stableford.

This year’s the trophy was won by Liz Thompson with 22 Medford points and the runner-up was Sally Woolmington with 24 points.

An Inter-Club match match against Came Down played at Bridport resulted a win for the visiting team.
