Golf: Cotgrove’s on form to secure cup prize at Bridport

The weather was fine and warm but there was a stiff breeze which seemed to be doing its best to carry drives into the thick rough.

This resulted in 13 of the 49 entrants handing in NR cards.

The winner of the cup was David Cotgrove and his nett 70 score was two shots clear of his closest rival.

The winner of Division One was George Brown with a nett 72 and runner-up was Ian Thacker, scoring a nett 73.

The second man in Division Two was Allan Huntington with 72 points.

Cotgrove received a one-shot handicap cut.

Sunday saw 87 men playing the Three Man Open, a medal round with two scores to count.

A total of 15 away teams and 14 home teams competed but many of the home teams had an away player.

The weather was absolutely glorious and the day was enjoyed by all players.

The trio of P Hart, D Miners and L Craddock (129) took top spot on the day with G Gerrard, M Savage and P Lathy (132) second. Third spot went to R Tipp, S Bull and S Griff (134).

The Carnival Cup, an annual mixed Stableford competition, was won this year by the ladies’ vice captain Janie Dowling with a score of 36 points.

Two players had 34 points but the runner-up on count back was Martin Dennan, with third place going to Peter Johnson.

In the Midweek Mixed Stableford the rose among the 13 thorns, Julie Oliver (15), came second with 31 points.

The winner was Angus Nicoll (16) scoring 34 points. Marc Harwood (12) took third spot after countback with 30 points.

Ladies' section

SATURDAY and Tuesday saw ladies playing an EG Medal and on Tuesday we also played the first round of The Janet Holmes Cup.

The weather forecast was a bright and sunny day but when the clouds rolled in it was decidedly chilly for those dressed in shorts!
