DORSET captain Luke Webb has his sights set on another deep run in the NCCA Trophy ahead of visiting Buckinghamshire at Gerrards Cross tomorrow (11am).

Last season, Dorset made the semi-finals of the National Counties 50-over competition only to lose to Berkshire.

Dorset have been placed in Group Four alongside Wales, Wiltshire and Staffordshire and the top two teams advance to the quarter-finals.

And although Dorset were pipped to a place in T20 finals day by Cornwall, Webb holds great confidence of progression in his exciting young team.

He told Echosport: “We got to the semi-final last year so we’re really keen to qualify, get out of the group and try and go deep in the competition.

“It gives a bit more leeway in the 50-over competition than the Twenty20 because the top two qualify.

“So, it’s a really good opportunity to hopefully put another good campaign together.

“I’d say we’ve got a lot of self-confidence in the way we play our cricket and the culture we’ve got.

“Having said that, it’s a really strong competition. Every side at our level, no matter what the competition, is strong and has really good cricketers.

“We won’t be taking anything for granted, starting with Buckinghamshire. All the teams we play against are going to be really good tests.

“So, there’s a lot of self-confidence but also a lot of respect for the standard.”

While pinpointing Dorset’s brand of attacking cricket, made possible by the talent in their youthful squad, Webb also spoke of the home-grown feel to his side.

“We’ve got Dorset cricket to a place where we’re young and talented,” he said.

“It’s a really good team to be a part of. I have a lot of pride in that the side that tends to be picked has a lot of players that have been Dorset developed.

“We’re really focusing on our own talent and have the luxury of being able to look at players like Ross Whiteley in the Twenty20 and others like Sam Young, that are great for the younger players to learn off.

“It’s a fantastically talented squad. It’s great to see so many young players succeeding.”

With the T20 Blast currently in action, Dorset could be without Hampshire stars Whiteley, Felix Organ and Tom Prest for much of their Trophy campaign.

However, Organ is confirmed in the 12-man squad along with Bournemouth’s Lewis Freak after he impressed on second-team duties against the Isle of Wight last weekend.

Webb added: “Obviously the T20 Blast will affect the availability of those involved, but I can say Felix is in. He makes his first appearance (of the season).

“It goes without saying the talent Felix has. He’s brilliant player to have in the dressing room and has been part of our setup for a number of years now.”
