BRIDPORT are “looking into” the possibility of installing a 3G pitch at their St Mary’s Field home, manager Chris Herbst has revealed.

Bridport have been plagued by two floods at their headquarters this season, the first one being particularly bad when forcing a huge clean-up operation at the Beehive clubhouse.

When the adjacent River Brit burst its banks a second time, the water levels were not as high but still enough to deny the Bees any home matches for a spell.

And the heavy volume of rainfall in late February into March meant the Bees were forced into postponing five consecutive first-team games due to waterlogging.

Speaking to the Bridport News, Herbst suggested the Bees’ hierarchy are exploring their options with regards to an artificial pitch.

“I think 3G pitches are the way forward,” he said.

“Say, for instance, Bridport got one, the youth sides would use it and you’d generate money, so it’s a win-win. I don’t know the ins and outs.

“I know there’s people higher than me looking into it.

“That would be the way to go, then there’s never any reason (for postponements) unless it’s absolutely freezing. That will be the way forward, eventually.”

Asked if National League System divisions could be more forceful in addressing the issue of postponements, Herbst replied: “Maybe more flexible in the sense of it there’s a 3G you can use.

“We’ve got eight games in 18 days, or something like that. It’s going to be tough on the lads and we’re going to need 25 players to get through that. Luckily, we have but it won’t be our best team.

“It’s so frustrating and I don’t really know the answer to it.”
