BRIDPORT have announced their intention to create a new development side ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The Bees last entered a third team into Dorset League Division One in the 2022/23 campaign before withdrawing midway through the campaign.

But due to increased numbers of players at the club and the renaissance led by first-team boss Chris Herbst, Bridport are reviving their third string.

Early indications are that the Bees would seek entry in Division Five, although Dorset Football League officials must first sign off their application.

Renowned youth football guru Martin Phillips will oversee the third team.

In a statement, the Bees said: “We believe this move will not only help us keep local talent but also nurture their growth for the present and future.

“Bridport Development team will bring together a mix of young talents and experienced players, creating an ideal environment for skill development.

“This blend of experience levels will foster a supportive atmosphere, preparing players for the challenges of competing at Bridport's first and reserve team levels.

“Leading the charge is Martin Phillips, bringing his expertise and passion for player development to the table.

“With five years of experience as chairman of Bridport Youth, Martin is well-equipped to ensure strong collaboration and guide younger players toward staying in the game and representing their local team.”

Elsewhere, Bridport Ladies are on the hunt for new players to back up their successful first season in the Somerset County Women's Football League.

Lianne Dunk’s Bees are currently in third place in the Division Two South tier and made the League Cup quarter-finals.

There could also be space for a development team, should the Bees gain approval.

However, they have first appealed for more players and coaches to help shoulder the work needed o run a second side.

The Bees added: “The club are therefore seeking players, age 16 or up at start of season, and coaches interested in joining us on this journey.

“Bridport Ladies are committed to supporting coaching education, offering assistance with coaching courses, and are particularly interested in collaborating with a female coach to drive the team's growth as well as the women's game as a whole.”
