LYME Regis Sailing Club rewarded their stock of young talent at the annual Youth Awards.

A low-key event was held with the emphasis on commending all youth members for their progress over the summer and autumn.

Evie McCollum and Maggie Daly won the Novices’ trophy, while Ed Stubbs and Noah Kelly won the Team Racing Cups.

Special Mention Plate honours went to Henry Cackett and Alex McDonald took the Personal Challenge Cup.

Josh Dean, Frankie Remington and Freddie Cooper won teamwork trophies, while Josie Bennett picked up the Engraved Youth Glass.

Elliot Sammons claimed the Seamanship Trophy and there was special recognition for the departing Simon Law who was presented with the Personal Award for Service to the youth section.

Law has run the Saturday Seamanship Skills group since it was set up and is now off to work abroad with RYA establishments to further his career in the sailing world.

“We will miss Simon and wish him well,” youth co-ordinator Sally Holman said.

“His group provides for those who step up from Tuesday Improvers but are not yet ready, or do not wish, to get into racing.”

Elliot Sammons will take over leading this group along with other experienced club sailors.

Before the trophies were dished out, Holman welcomed everyone and gave a resume of the past season’s youth sailing and events.

Race group coach Graham Cook then told sailors and their parents about that option available to the young sailors wishing to improve their racing skills, joining club and class racing.

Some also chose to take RYA instructing courses and work with club youth groups and the Sea School.

“We have a vibrant youth section, four groups for training plus a new one set up recently for young sailors becoming familiar with their own new higher-performance boats,” Holman continued.

“The ethos of helping younger beginners and improvers voluntarily remains strong, it’s a very supportive atmosphere. All who started newly with us in our basic group in 2023, are keen to continue in 2024.

“More under-18s have been joining in club racing, even in the winter, thanks to coaches and competitive sailors Graham Cook and Jerry Rook.

“We thank our adult teams who run the groups, and the Lyme Regis Sailing Club committee who support us.”

The new sailing season starts at Easter, but the beginners and improvers group is now full for this year at 29 members.
