TRUSTEES of a highly-respected west Dorset fund are inviting applications for financial support to help budding sportspeople progress their careers.

The Mark Broad Memorial Fund was set up following his untimely death aged 38 in 2004, having been a very popular local sportsman who excelled at cricket and football.

Broad was a key all-rounder for Bridport, Cattistock and Symene Cricket Clubs and was a versatile footballer, turning out for Netherbury and Broadwindsor before he became part of Chideock’s treble-winning side in 1988.

Broad also gave invaluable time to coach Bridport Cricket Club’s youth teams.

The memorial fund was set up with its objectives to provide financial assistance to young people in striving to reach the highest possible level in their chosen sport, in the west Dorset area.

It has raised more than £70,000 since its inception and has supported a vast range athletes across many sports from equestrian to golf, athletics to cricket and many more.

Chaired by Mr Broad’s wife, Nikki, the fund is now welcoming nominations or requests for assistance from individual youths or youth teams in the west Dorset area.

In a statement, fund trustee Colin Willcox said: “The trustees would like to thank Loders Young Players who for many years provided sporting facilities through their own club.

“The Mark Broad Memorial Fund supported many of their members over the years and it was extremely generous and gratifying to be donated the balance of their funds on their cessation, well over £2,000.

“This will enhance the monies available to the Mark Broad Fund to distribute this year.”
